IIHS driver-death-rate research reinforces another important point: safety outcomes vary enormously among individual vehicles. For 2020 and equivalent models studied over 2018–2021, IIHS calculated an overall driver death rate of 38 per million registered vehicle years, while individual models ranged dramatically above and below that average.


So yes: size is relevant.


But “larger” should not become shorthand for “automatically safer.”


IIHS research published in 2025 found that adding 500 pounds to vehicles below 4,000 pounds could reduce risk to their own drivers, while additional weight above 4,000 pounds produced little additional benefit for occupants and could increase risk to people in other vehicles.
